Sarah Robson with UAP Studio | The Residence Hyde Park

Located in the heart of Sydney's CBD, The Residence Hyde Park is the result of a refurbishment of the former NSW Police Headquarters into a prestigious residential precinct. UAP were comissioned by Hutchinsons Builders for their clients Pamada, Galileo and AMP Capital Investments to manage the public art project in alignment with the city of Sydney Public Art policy. The Artist appointed was Sarah Robson, who created a piece titled ‘Calais Deviations’, designed to engage with the building, pedestrian viewers and the surrounding environment as well as existing historical monuments.

Located outside the building's main foyer, the sculpture consists of six irregular pillars constructed from either bronze or aluminium, each appearing to intersect whilst remaining physically separate. Each pillar has a unique yet complimentary colour or finish to reinforce the multiple relationships between the individual components.

The sculpture is located on the corner of College and Stanley Streets, a vibrant and active part of the city that exists alongside places of contemplation and discovery such as St Mary’s Cathedral and Hyde Park. The piece provides a stable yet dynamic experience to mirror this combination present in the area, with its forms appearing to merge and separate as the viewer moves around engages with it.

The sculptural elements create forms that are reminiscent of features in the surrounding area, the architectural details in the built environment and the majestic trees present in Hyde Park. The implied movement and carefully balanced units emulate the vibrant and contemporary transformation of this urban site.

Jim Hodges | Gladstone Gallery

Gladstone Gallery has recently announced an exhibiton of work by Jim Hodges, to be shown across both gallery spaces in Chelsea. The two-part exhibition sees Hodges present several new large-scale sculptures that investigate notions of time, movement, color, and reflection.

Hodges often uses manipulated mirrored elements and this current project sees him exhibit his largest black-mirrored sculpture to date. The room-sized installation seamlessly juxtaposes dense organic rock formations with interventions of synthetic beauty through the use of coloured metallic glazes.

Hodges' practice resists the definitional aims of discourse, instead offering multilayered works that evoke resonant themes such as identity, loss, mortality, and love.

The exhibiton will be shown in Gladstone Gallery until December 23, 2011.

Christopher Janney | Harmonic Convergence

Using light and sound, Christopher Janney's 'Harmonic Convergence' transforms a pedestrian walkway within the Miami International Airport into a large scale kaleidoscope. The installation replaces Janney's 1997 commission at the airport 'Harmonic Runway', and is set to be inaugurated to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami 2011 this December.

Employing light, colour and sound the artwork creates an ever changing 'sonic portrait' of South Florida. The sounds of tropical birds, thunderstorms, and other environments native to the region are projected throughout the space, with video sensors causing the density and composition of the sounds to change relative to the number of people in the space.

In order to install the piece, the louvers previously positioned on the western side were removed, increasing the light and openness of the space. Coloured glass panels were then installed, capturing the light and casting an array of shapes and colours throughout the walkway, visually enriching the journey of passengers entering the aiport terminal.

UAP Studio | Legacy Way

The Transcity Joint Venture was recently awarded the $1.5 billion tender to design, construct, manage and operate Brisbane City Council’s Legacy Way project – the 4.6km road tunnel connecting the city’s western and inner northern suburbs.

UAP is a member of the design alliance on the project, which is led by RPS, and responsible for a number of areas within the urban design for the project.

UAP Studio’s Amanda Harris and Stacie Gibson are currently developing a public art design which will adorn the 370m² ventilation station and 15m high ventilation outlets. Their concept for the project draws on the parallels between the functionality of the ventilation station and the transpiration process which takes place within a plant’s cells by referencing the microscopic sectional view of a plant’s vascular system. Furthermore the principles of movement, transport and connectivity are common links with the design influences guiding the treatment of the eastern ventilation station.

Legacy Way is a key component in Council’s plan to provide a long-term solution to Brisbane’s transport challenges. It will connect the Western Freeway at Toowong to the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove. Once open, Legacy Way will almost halve peak hour travel times between the Centenary Bridge and the ICB.

Ned Kahn with UAP Studio | BDTX Update

Fabrication and Installation of ‘Turbulent Line’, the Brisbane Domestic Terminal car park’s kinetic façade by American artist Ned Kahn is well underway with many panels on the 5,000 square metre artwork already installed on the Western side of the car park. The fluid, rippling effect of Kahn’s artwork can already be seen from the Domestic terminals, Virgin Australia lounge and the Airtrain’s platform when the slightest breeze shifts across the panels.

Installing the façade has been made much faster and simpler thanks to a piece of robotic machinery designed by UAP and Troy Montgomery Construction affectionately titled ‘The Ned’. Based on a modified two tonne excavator, ‘The Ned’ utilises custom designed compressed air clamps and trolleys which allow the project team to install each portion of the façade from the interior of the car park, removing the need for exterior scaffolding, cranes and other devices. ‘The Ned’ is being put forward for a Queensland Safe Work Award in 2012.

‘Turbulent Line’ is scheduled for completion in January 2012.

Created by Indigenous Australian artist Jonathan Jones with Designer Jamie Perrow, The Star in Sydney is now home to an important example of contemporary Australian new media art – a 40‐metre long LED water wall ‘Untitled (Eora: water seasons)’.

This highly innovative installation celebrates traditional Aboriginal knowledge and heritage by conceptualising the seasonal moments of the surrounding Sydney Harbour environment, translating each season in to animated patterns and imagery. The water wall is integrated harmoniously into the building’s entry façade and provides an engaging experience for visitors to The Star and pedestrians and motorists in the surrounding public realm.

This artwork will pay homage to the traditional Aboriginal people of Sydney Harbour, the Eora, and their strong and vibrant seafaring culture, while directly acknowledging the traditional custodians of the site, the Wongal people.

The work has been created with the collaboration and contribution of local Aboriginal communities, marine biologists, archaeologists, historians and underwater filmmakers. The result is a considered, site‐specific artwork that recalls the beauty, marvel and power of Sydney Harbour and its traditional owners.

James & Eleanor Avery with UAP Studio | 'Lucky Dip' - The Darling Hotel, Sydney

James and Eleanor Avery are a British‐born collaborative based in Brisbane, Australia. Their collaborations which have appeared across the globe including Italy, the United Kingdom and Australia, exist at the interface of sculpture and installation, drawing on architectural sensibilities and historical references to realise ambitious works that explore the dislocated layers of order and disorder within contemporary culture. Their works conflate concerns within contemporary culture with historical notes, drawing on a sci‐fi aesthetic.

The Avery’s commission for The Star in Sydney is a suspended 3.5m² vibrant red Swallow which will greet guests at the entrance to The Star complex’s soon to be opened five star boutique hotel, The Darling Hotel.

Titled Lucky Dip, the gracious bird is formed by over 400 individual facets and is carrying two diamonds in the shape of the cheeky ‘double cherry’ symbol.

“Our understanding is that a major focus of the development is the regeneration of the site, making it once again a vibrant and energized space. The artwork we have proposed respond to this concept of ‘regeneration’ through the sculptural representation of vital life forms and positive symbolism,” Eleanor Avery said.

“The swallow is a symbol of hope, fertility and the renewal of life. Our swallow is carrying in its beak two diamonds, on a cherry‐like stem which symbolises love, excellence, purity, strength, power and brilliance,” James Avery added.

Leo Villareal with UAP Studio - 'Flying Star' for The Star, Sydney

The Star, formerly Star City, has undergone an $860 million transformation into a one‐of‐a‐kind entertainment destination, which officially re‐opened its doors in September.

Understanding the need to create a sophisticated and highly engaging public artwork program for The Star, UAP’s Curatorial Team drew on local knowledge and global networks to create an art strategy that considered the unique cultural, social and physical roles of the site while addressing the practical commercial and urban requirements, this led to engaging some of the brightest artistic talent from Australia and across the globe to develop concepts for the redevelopment.

The project consisting of a 40‐metre LED backed water wall by emerging Australian artist Jonathan Jones and UAP lead designer Jamie Perrow; a suspended, faceted sculpture of a gliding swallow by British born collaborative James and Eleanor Avery; and a diptych suspended artwork by highly acclaimed New York based artist Leo Villareal are the results of a successful collaboration between UAP, Echo Entertainment, Brookfield Multiplex, Fitzpatrick & Partners, Cox Richards and the contributing local and international artists.

Leo Villareal whose immersive digital sculptures echo organic and architectural forms are showcased in some of the world’s most prestigious galleries including the MoMA PS1 in New York and National Gallery of Art in Washington, has created his first major three dimensional piece for the project, a site‐specific response titled Flying Star.

Suspended both within The Star’s main entrance and 16 metres in the air within the entertainment complex’s glass void, Flying Star is a constantly evolving starburst of tubular LED fixtures arrayed in a radial pattern. Villareal has created a number of digital sequences that the artwork’s programming will randomly illuminate, generating constantly evolving patterns capable of incorporating up to 16 million individual colours.

Flying Star’s patterns take inspiration from the research of mathematician John Conway who invented The Game of Life, the best known cellular automata program, and explores the brain’s compulsion to recognize patterns and the hard coded desire to understand and decipher meaning.

The work which has also been adopted as the focal point of the entertainment venue’s branding, brings life, energy and an iconic form to the space and is capable of being seen from as far as the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

“My work is very fleeting; it’s really about that moment, the instance. I think that in the void space within the architecture of The Star the piece will bring life to the space. There are many different vantage points for the piece; you could be right next to it in the bar, you could be below it going up an escalator, catch a glimpse of a fragment and then be drawn towards it, or see it from the street or Darling Harbour. Its legible on multiple scales as it activates the surrounding environment.” Villareal said.

When asked about the collaborative process working with UAP’s Australian studio Leo commented saying; “In the last few years I have begun working more outside the USA. It’s nice when you are travelling and out of your comfort zone to work with an organisation that knows what’s going on. UAP is very technically able and are undaunted by complicated fabrication and installation issues. It was great to discover UAP as they allow me to be able to focus on the idea.”

Casey Hughes Architects + Hiroshi Jacobs Collaboration | Harvard Graduate School of Design

California's Casey Hughes Architects and Hiroshi Jacobs, a Washington based designer have collaborated on this project currently being displayed at Harvard Graduate School of Design. ‘Flatland: a romance of many dimensions’ was developed as part of a competition initiated by the school’s student forum and building services.

10,000 feet of custom-made red and blue bungee cord hang suspended from the school's Cambridge street entrance, continuing along the face of the Gund Hall facade. The installation intends to create volume and form within a one dimensional surface by combining mathematical efficiency, economical stability and durability. In doing so it creates a complex range of spaces that morph and change depending on one's vantage point, adding depth and movement to the fixed facade.

The artwork's bright colours and large scale installation give vibrancy and intrigue to the space, enhancing both the visual aesthetics and public appreciation of the facade.

Arnaud Lapierre + AUDI | Ring

French designer Arnaud Lapierre in collaboration with car manufacturer Audi has created 'Ring', a public artwork that was showcased at the 2011 Foire Internationale D'Art Contemporain

The installation employs mirrored cubes stacked in a circular arrangement that manipulate and alter the visual perception of the surrounding space. Standing at over 4 meters tall, the piece has significant spacial reach, distorting everything from the sky, buildings, monuments and passers by, fracturing the usual relationship that individuals have with the piazza as well as themselves.

Olafur Eliasson - 'Your Body of Work' Exhibition

Recognised Danish artist Olafur Eliasson recently opened the first showcase of his work in South America titled 'Your Body of Work'.

The exhibition includes 10 major works located in areas around Sao Paulo, Brazil where visitors experience installations that tamper with their perception of colour and spacial orientation.

The basic elements of the weather – water, light, temperature, pressure – are the materials that Olafur Eliasson has used throughout his career. His installations regularly feature elements appropriated from nature – billowing steam replicating a water geyser, glistening rainbows or fog-filled rooms. By introducing ‘natural’ phenomena, such as water, mist or light, into an un specifically cultivated setting, be it a city street or an art gallery, Eliasson encourages the viewer to reflect upon their understanding and perception of the physical world that surrounds them. 'Your Body of Work' will exhibit until January 29th, 2012.

Katherine Regional Public Art Workshop @ UAP Studio

Over the past 2 days UAP has been visited by a group of 8 talented emerging artists from Katherine, a town of 6,000 people in the Northern Territory of Australia.

As part of the Katherine Regional Cultural Precinct (KRCP) public art program UAP in collaboration with consultant Felicity Green have facilitated 2 skills development workshops for artists from the Katherine region.

Over the 2 days the emerging artists Jimmy Wavehill, Biddy Wavehill, Myra Rory, Bill Harney, Billy Driver, Garry Manbullo, Cedric Fordimail and Manuel Pamkel have created site-specific public art concepts for the KRCP with the support of UAP Studio's Design Manager Jamie Perrow and Artist Liaison Mary Stuart who have both shared valuable insight in to the public art process and assisted the artists to further develop their initial concepts.

The Katherine Regional Cultural Precinct (KRCP) public art outcomes are to be delivered mid 2012.

“Immersive Surfaces” was a publicly presented video projection installation onto the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn during the Dumbo Arts Festival from September 23 – 25, 2011. The multi-part video projection, created by over 20 international artists and curators, will cover over 30,000 sq. feet of the Manhattan Bridge Anchorage, Archway and the surrounding cityscape, through the use of cutting-edge video mapping technology.

“Immersive Surfaces” was the featured piece consisting of a video mapped projection installation, conceived and created by a group of six artists, Simon Anaya, Farkas Fulop, Richard Jochum, Johnny Moreno, John Ensor Parker & Ryan Uzilevsky. With significant sponsorship from visual production company Senovva, Light Harvest Studio, and others, the artists developed a site-specific, multi-perspective 3D installation specially designed to the scale of the Manhattan Bridge Anchorage in Brooklyn.

The site-specific outcome was a dramatic visual display that allowed viewers to interact with the Manhattan Bridge in a new way.

Public Art Opportunity | Exterior Sculptural Works: Saltdean, UK

The Brighton Government in the UK have announced a £30,000 public art commission for an artwork to be located outside of the Grand Ocean development in Saltdean.

The funding is being provided by the developer, Explore Living. This funding is part of their planning conditions, through the Section 106 process.

The attractive Art Deco hotel has had several different owners since opening in 1938 and has now been converted into housing with 4 additional blocks now completed. The site consists of luxury apartments, one and two bed apartments and affordable housing. A doctor's surgery is located at ground floor level.

The artwork must reflect the Art Deco architecture and heritage of the building and be robust enough to withstand the high winds experienced in the area.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 5pm on 11th November 2011.

Serge Salat - Beyond Infinity | Touring Exhibition - China

French artist Serge Selat has designed a mirrored maze for a touring exhibition of China that will visit 10 cities over 3 months.
Originally installed in Shanghai's Westgate Mall, the installation doubled as a showroom for sponser Buick motors to showcase their vehicles.

Combining mirrors, light and music, Beyond Infinity creates the illusion of a space that never ends despite being situated in a fully enclosed box. Designed around the trigram of the yi king, the space effectively utilises spatial techniques similar to those found in traditional suzhou gardens as a means of framing the visitor experience as a 'mystical journey' through abstract chinese courtyards.

Having spent more than 2 decades designing these multi sensory spaces that combine virtual reality and fractual art, Salat draws inspiration from virtual art, labrynths and Chinese Taoist philosophy to create spaces that exist outside of time and space. Beyond Infinity embodies a strong theme of constant mutation and transformation, with the audiences perception of the space changing with every step as the mirrors constantly transform the visual suroundings.

The repeated use of shape, light and colour challenges the viewers perception of space and depth, resulting in a rich and visually stimulating experience.
